An Australian murderer has lost a legal bid to eat Vegemite in prison after claiming that a ban on the savoury spread breached his human rights.
Andre McKechnie sued the Victoria state government, saying its ban was unlawful because it denied him his right to enjoy Australian culture.
Vegemite has been banned from Victoria's prisons since 2006 over concerns that it hindered drug-detection dogs. Inmates would smear packages of drugs with the salty spread in an attempt to distract dogs with the strong odour.
