It has long been the subject of fierce debate, but finally Historic England - the official Government heritage body - has called it, and named a pub near Bath as the oldest pub in England.

Historic England's building archaeologist Dr James Wright said that all the other pubs that claim the title - and there are at least two dozen around the country that declare themselves the oldest - are 'myths and legends', but after studying each claim and matching it against known historical documents and science, the George Inn in the village of Norton St Philip is the oldest continually licensed pub in England.
