In this border town of about 700 people, you can’t separate the United States and Canada — regardless of politics.
Driving its streets, two things stand out: a downhill funnel to the US-Canada border checkpoint, and a uniquely ornate library that for more than a century has embodied the longstanding bond between the two neighboring allies.
The Haskell Free Library and Opera House opened in 1901 with the US-Canada border running right through the middle of the building, represented by a black line on the floor. Some parts of the library are in Vermont while others are in Quebec, although visitors can use both sides.
