NEED TO KNOW
One of the worst global energy crises in decades threatened to escalate, as a U.S.-Iran standoff prevented tankers from using the Strait of Hormuz. Here’s what to know.
Latest news: The fragile ceasefire in Iran is under threat, after the U.S. attacked and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship it said had tried to evade its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Hundreds of vessels are now waiting at each end for clearance. In response, oil prices jumped 5%. Brent crude is now at $95.62 a barrel. [AP]
Pain at the pump: The price of gas may not drop below $3 per gallon until next year, Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNN. The average national gas price was $4.04 per gallon yesterday, up from $2.98 on Feb. 26, two days before the Iran war started. [USA Today]
Air travel: With jet fuel now at double its pre-war price, some airlines are cutting routes this summer. Travelers headed to Europe may be particularly hard hit, amid warnings European airports have just six weeks’ worth of fuel remaining. See which routes could be affected. [USA Today]
