Twelve months ago this week, Tonga forward Eli Katoa needed emergency surgery after suffering what was described as "seizure activity" on the bench during their 40-14 defeat by New Zealand at the Pacific Championships in Auckland.
Katoa played despite suffering a significant blow to the head in the warm-up when team-mate Lehi Hopoate accidentally caught him in the face with his shoulder.
He then suffered two more blows during the match. He passed a head injury assessment (HIA) after the first, but did not return to the field following the second. Three members of Tonga's medical staff received two-year bans following an NRL investigation into the incident.
