خففت وزيرة الداخلية البريطانية شبانة محمود جزءًا من خطتها لتشديد شروط الإقامة الدائمة. والنتيجة ليست تراجعا كاملا عن النهج الجديد؛ فالقواعد ستصبح أكثر صرامة على مئات الآلاف، لكن فئات بعينها نجت من بعض أشد القيود بعد اعتراضات سياسية ومهنية واسعة.

وبموجب الإصلاحات التي أعلنتها الحكومة، والمقرر تطبيقها تدريجيا بدءا من عام 2027، لن يعود التقدم للإقامة الدائمة بعد 5 سنوات هو المسار المعتاد لمعظم المهاجرين، إذ سترتفع المدة إلى 10 سنوات لنحو نصف مليون شخص، إلى جانب شروط أشد تتعلق باللغة والسجل الجنائي والالتزامات المالية.
